## Terms

**Handoff** - the point at which one agent stops working a task and another
continues it. A handoff carries the task state, not only the next instruction.

**Task state** - what has been tried, what has been ruled out and why. It is the
part of a handoff that keeps the receiving agent from repeating work.

**Operational limit** - a bound on a step that holds regardless of which agent
runs it, such as how long the step may take or how many times it may retry.

## Using these definitions

These terms are illustrative and local to this documentation set. They define no
released product behaviour and carry no meaning outside these pages. The bounds
named above are listed concretely in
[operational limits](../guide/operations/limits.md).
